Welcome to the {COMMO} Host mode
Now that {COMMO} 5.1 has been released, my beta testing macro
project has been released to all of you as the {COMMO} HOST. I
have spent many hours in developing this macro, as well as testing {COMMO},
and I must say that you are using the best product out there right now,
meaning {COMMO}.
I wrote this macro for my own use, as I needed a small host mode
and did not want to use the monster packages out there. Disk
space is important to me, and that was the main driving goal.
I have now included multi-user capabilities but not a message
system or bulletins.
The files that are contained in this archive are:
JBREAD.ME This file.
JBHOST.MAC The host macro program.
JBHOST.HLP The host help file.
COMMO.MAC {COMMO} macro file with JBHOST installed into it.
Installing the Host
To install the host mode perform the following steps:
1. Copy the JBHOST.MAC and JBHOST.HLP to your {COMMO} directory.
2. Please examine the macro file {:setup} section. This section
contains many special variables that need to be set for each
individual system. These MUST be changed before running the host mode.
That is all it takes. I hope you have fun with the host mode. I
can tell you that I sure enjoyed developing it.
Version 1.1:
Version 1.1 of the host mode adds the ability to have new users,
not just one person limited.
With the MOSTHOST, when new users log on to the system, a file is
generated for each person. The name of this file is the password
that the user entered. This is how MOSTHOST does its checking
when you enter the password.
Well, with JBHOST, I decided not to do it that way. I thought I
could just use one file. The name of the file is JBUSERS, and
need not be present. The host mode will take care of itself if it is
missing.
The format of the file is:
username
password
Novice/Expert
level
username
password
Novice/Expert
level
This file will be placed in the COMMO home directory. This makes
it nice for those of you who just want to add a few names to the
list.
The Novice/Expert line in the file requires either a Y or N.
This will tell the host whether to use expert MODE (N), or novice mode (Y).
I added a LIMIT command to the opening screen of the host mode.
This command will allow you to change the amount of time a person
is allowed to be online.
Version 1.2:
This version was somewhat of a major revision. I re-arranged the
menus to allow for an archive menu, a dos menu, and more. The
scroll command was added to the opening screen to allow the viewing of
the scroll back buffer. Some other bug fixes were done and autobaud
detection was added. For those of you running 9600 and higher baud modems,
this might not work for you. You may have to alter the macro. If you
want autobaud turned off, simply change the AUTOBAUD variable to N.
Version 5.1:
In this release I have added many new features.
1. This version adds levels for users logging into the host
mode. Each new user is given a level 0. This restricts the user
from shelling to DOS or from shutting down the host mode. If you want
someone to have that privilege then you need to change the host mode jbusers
file manually. Simply change the 0 to a 1 and all will be well.
2. I have added the LOCAL command to the main opening screen.
This command will take you right to the main opening menu. No
passwords are required. Remember that the SYSOP command is like
logging on to the system from a remote site.
3. I have added support for any archiver that the RV utility supports
and have eliminated the archive menu completely. Now the {V} option
simply asks for an archive filename (you MUST give the extension) and RV
will get the information for you.
I added HS/LINK to the transfer files menus. This will require that you
have this new exciting protocol in your commo directory, or at least the
directory specified by PDIR in the macro.
4. I have rearranged some of the menus and have made the host a
lot friendlier. The opening screen has changed to numbered options
instead of using words. This was recommended by Fred Brucker.
5. I have added four new commands for the main terminal menu
screen only. These commands are not described in the help file since
the general user does not see them. The first of these commands is
{K}ill. this command abruptly hangs up the modem without warning. This is
good if un-wanted users are un your host. The {L}ower command will lower a
user's security from a 1 to a 0. {R}aise will raise a
user's level to a 1, which to me seems more practical. The {!} Bang
command will shell out to DOS while the user is on line. This could be
helpful if you are in a situation that requires you to change
directories for the user or if changes to files need to be made. These commands will not
appear only when a user logs in or if you log on using the sysop. If
you log on locally you will see the BANG command as well here, since it
could be used in this situation as well. BANG can be executed from ALL
menus even if its menu option is not shown.
6. You can now chat with the sysop from almost all menus. Also
the {G}oodbye command is now found in most menus as well. The expert
command is found in all menus.
7. I have added a new option on the host mode opening screen. This
command will allow you to set the time out value. This will determine
the number of seconds before the host initiates a logoff. This value
defaults to 0, meaning no time limit. In addition, this new command and
the limit commands now use the {INPUT} function instead of a
{GETSTRING}.
8. WARNING!!!!! Make sure that DSZPROG is set correctly. The
COMMO.SET file that comes with COMMO must be changed. Make sure that
the file's extension is given (DSZ.COM). This is vital since the
execute direct command MUST have this to allow for correct execution.Make sure that DSZPROG is set correctly. In the
commo set file that comes with commo
